Na América,
eu ponho meu anel
no seu pau
que é o lugar dele.
Nenhum cavaleiro
trazendo o terror
ou soldado apocalíptico
há de chegar
e chagar nossa união.
Eles estão ocupados
demais pilhando
a terra para nos ver.
Eles não sabem
que nos precisamos
criticamente.
Esperam que tiremos licença médica,
fiquemos a noite toda perante a TV,
morramos por nossas próprias mãos.
Eles não sabem
que estamos reunindo forças.
A cada beijo
confirmamos o novo mundo.

Essex Hemphill foi um poeta americano, nascido em Chicago a 16 de abril de 1957. Publicou Earth Life (1985), Conditions (1986) e Ceremonies: Prose and Poetry (1992). Compareceu com seu trabalho no filme Looking for Langston (1989), de Isaac Julien, e no documentário Tongues United (1992), de Marlon Riggs. O poeta e ativista morreu em decorrência da AIDS a 4 de novembro de 1995.
