Acordo, me corta a noite escura, não o dia,
Que horas, Oh que negras horas nós não vimos
Esta noite! que visões, coração; e caminhos!
E veremos, na longa espera da luz tardia.
Tal falo com testemunha. Mas quando digo
Horas, digo anos, vida. E minha desdita
São gritos incontáveis, cartas remetidas
Pra tão longe, ah!, ao ser que me é querido.
Sou fel, sou cor-combustão. Foi Deus que escolheu
Amargo o meu sabor: e meu sabor fui eu;
Ossos alçou, saturou meu sangue em castigo.
A levedura da alma amarga a massa ao leu.
Sou como os perdidos, seu castigo é o meu
Ser só um sudorento ser; mas é pior comigo.

Hours I mean years, mean life. And my lament
Is cries countless, cries like dead letters sent
To dearest him that lives alas! away.
I am gall, I am heartburn. God's most deep decree
Bitter would have me taste: my taste was me;
Bones built in me, flesh filled, blood brimmed the curse.
Selfyeast of spirit a dull dough sours. I see
The lost are like this, and their scourge to be
As I am mine, their sweating selves; but worse.

A Grandeza de Deus

O mundo está carregado da grandeza de Deus.
Vai chamejar — chispas em sacudidas folhas de metal;
Vai expandir-se — óleo que imprensado escorre, tal e qual,
E alaga. Por que o homem não teme o açoite dos céus?
Gerações têm caminhado, quanto elas têm caminhado!
Tudo tem manchas de homem, partilha cheiro de homem,
O solo está desnudo, mas pés calçados não o sentem;
Pelas lides, pelo tráfego, um mundo sujo e crestado;
E, apesar disso tudo, a natureza nunca se esgota;
Todas as coisas nela vivem num frescor renovado;
Inda que no turvo ocaso sumam as últimas luzes,
A manhã, na fímbria castanha do oriente, brota —
Porque o Espírito Santo, sobre este mundo vergado,
Vigia com peito cálido e oh! luzentes asas.

Gerard Manley Hopkins
THE WORLD is charged with the grandeur of God.
It will flame out, like shining from shook foil;
It gathers to a greatness, like the ooze of oil
Crushed. Why do men then now not reck his rod?
Generations have trod, have trod, have trod;
And all is seared with trade; bleared, smeared with toil;
And wears man’s smudge and shares man’s smell: the soil
Is bare now, nor can foot feel, being shod.
And for all this, nature is never spent;
There lives the dearest freshness deep down things;
And though the last lights off the black West went
Oh, morning, at the brown brink eastward, springs—
Because the Holy Ghost over the bent
World broods with warm breast and with ah! bright wings.

Lanterna Externa

Uma lanterna move-se na noite escura,
Que às vezes nos apraz olhar. Quem anda
Ali? – medito. De onde, para onde o manda
Dentro da escuridão essa luz insegura?

Homens passam por mim, cuja beleza pura
Em molde ou mente ou mais um dom maior demanda.
Chovem em nosso ar pesado a sua branda
Luz, até que distância ou morte os desfigura.

Morte ou distância vêm. Por mais que para vê-los
Volteie a vista, é em vão: eu perco o que persigo.
Longe do meu olhar, longe dos meus desvelos

Cristo vela. E o olhar de Cristo, em paz ou perigo,
Os vê, coração quer, amor provê, pé ante pé, com suaves zelos:
Resgate e redenção, primeiro, íntimo e último amigo.

SOMETIMES a lantern moves along the night,
That interests our eyes. And who goes there?
I think; where from and bound, I wonder, where,
With, all down darkness wide, his wading light?

Men go by me whom either beauty bright
In mould or mind or what not else makes rare:
They rain against our much-thick and marsh air
Rich beams, till death or distance buys them quite.

Death or distance soon consumes them: wind
What most I may eye after, be in at the end
I cannot, and out of sight is out of mind.

Christ minds: Christ’s interest, what to avow or amend
There, éyes them, heart wánts, care haúnts, foot fóllows kínd,
Their ránsom, théir rescue, ánd first, fást, last friénd.

Gerard Manley Hopkins foi um poeta e padre jesuíta inglês, nascido a 28 de julho de 1844. Autor de uma das mais belas e estranhas obras poéticas do período, seus poemas só seriam amplamente conhecidos duas décadas após sua morte, em 1918, quando foram editados por seu amigo Robert Bridges, a quem Hopkins conheceu em Oxford, onde entraria em contato também com os Pré-Rafaelitas e com o grande Walter Pater, seu professor. O poeta também manteve um diálogo com Christina Rossetti.
 
Ainda em Oxford, conheceu o jovem poeta Digby Mackworth Dolben (1848 – 1867), acontecimento descrito por seus biógrafos como o de maior importância em sua vida emocional. Muitos de seus poemas de amor seriam dedicados ao jovem, que morreu afogado com apenas 19 anos, tornando-se para Hopkins uma figura como a do também jovem poeta Maximilian Kronberger (1888 - 1904) para Stefan George, o Maximin de seus poemas. Gerard Manley Hopkins morreu em Dublin, aos 44 anos, a 8 de junho de 1889.
 
 A poesia de Hopkins já foi recepcionada no Brasil por Aíla de Oliveira Gomes, no volumePoemas (São Paulo: Companhia das Letras, 1989), e por Augusto de Campos no volumeHopkins: A Beleza Difícil (São Paulo: Editora Perspectiva, 1997).
