Gerard Manley Hopkins foi um poeta e padre jesuíta inglês, nascido a 28 de julho de 1844. Autor de uma das mais belas e estranhas obras poéticas do período, seus poemas só seriam amplamente conhecidos duas décadas após sua morte, em 1918, quando foram editados por seu amigo Robert Bridges, a quem Hopkins conheceu em Oxford, onde entraria em contato também com os Pré-Rafaelitas e com o grande Walter Pater, seu professor. O poeta também manteve um diálogo com Christina Rossetti.
Ainda em Oxford, conheceu o jovem poeta Digby Mackworth Dolben (1848 – 1867), acontecimento descrito por seus biógrafos como o de maior importância em sua vida emocional. Muitos de seus poemas de amor seriam dedicados ao jovem, que morreu afogado com apenas 19 anos, tornando-se para Hopkins uma figura como a do também jovem poeta Maximilian Kronberger (1888 - 1904) para Stefan George, o Maximin de seus poemas. Gerard Manley Hopkins morreu em Dublin, aos 44 anos, a 8 de junho de 1889.
