Christopher Okigbo nasceu na pequena vila de Ojoto, nos arredores de Onitsha no sudeste da Nigéria, em 1932. Seu pai era professor de uma escola católica, no auge do domínio britânico da região. O jovem poeta cresceria sob a influência de seu pai, católico fervoroso, e a de seu avô, um sacerdote da deusa das águas Idoto, personificada no rio de mesmo nome que corre na região de sua infância. Idoto seria a deusa invocada naquele que é o mais famoso poema de Christopher Okigbo, "The passage", aqui traduzido como "A passagem", mas também conhecido como "Heavensgate". Este sincretismo religioso pode ser sentido com força em seu poema, que inicia com a invocação a Idoto, para logo em seguido invocar Ana, que em comentários críticos sobre o poema tem sido identificada como a santa do catolicismo. Christopher Okigbo viria a se formar na mesma universidade em que estudaram o conhecido romancista nigeriano Chinua Achebe (n. 1930) e o poeta Wole Soyinka (n. 1934), ganhador do Prêmio Nobel de 1986, de quem Okigbo foi amigo.
Começou a publicar poemas na revistaBlack Orpheus, dedicada ao trabalho de poetas africanos e afro-americanos. Seus poemas seriam reunidos postumamente no volumeLabyrinths (1971). Christopher Okigbo morreu em 1967, com apenas 35 anos, lutando na guerra pela independência da República de Biafra (1967 - 1970), região separatista que permaneceria parte do território nigeriano.
A poesia de Okigbo é hoje considerada uma das mais importantes obras da poesia africana pós-colonial. Ainda que críticos nacionalistas o tenham criticado por adotar a língua inglesa, o poeta parece apropriar-se da língua do colonizador para implantar uma consciência mítica que só pode ser totalmente compreendida através da poética mística e vocal dos poetas africanos. Para nossa sensibilidade cristã, algo da poesia de Okigbo pode parecer alinhar-se a poetas como o W.B. Yeats do volumeThe Tower (1932) ou o T.S. Eliot deChoruses from "The Rock" (1934), mas a mim me parece que um dos poetas de língua inglesa com quem poderíamos traçar paralelos interessantes, passando pela poética de Christopher Okigbo, é o norte-americano Robert Duncan (1919 - 1988), de livros comoThe Opening of the Field (1960) eBending the Bow (1964).
Christopher Okigbo nasceu em 1932, o que o faz contemporâneo de brasileiros como Ferreira Gullar (n. 1930) e Augusto de Campos (n. 1931). Sua poética, porém, visionária e mística, talvez o ligue mais a um brasileiro como Roberto Piva (n. 1937). A experiência da leitura de seus poemas, contudo, parece-me de uma beleza bastante singular.
